Everything is Terrible

Ornette Coleman's idea was revolutionary at the time: put 8 musicians in a room and have them improvise for 40 minutes. The album comprises a single track (arbitrarily divided for the LP), but notionally each of the 8 musicians could be said to have a solo track: bass clarinet, trumpet, alto sax, pocket trumpet, bass, the other bass (the magnificent Scott LaFarro), drum, and the other drum.

That an entirely improvised album feels intimate is not surprising; what is surprising is how well it is structured (and I have to wonder if the fanfare/solo format was agreed on beforehand).
